Freya Willemoes-Wissing grew up in Johannesburg, studied Advertising with a focus on Art Direction, and went on to postgraduate Fine Arts at the Langeland Kunstskole in Denmark. Their first solo exhibition was at the Joao Ferreira Gallery in Cape Town in 2002.
Highlights since include the Venice Biennale in 2009, winning the international Premio OpenArt competition in Rome in 2013, and being commissioned to paint Nelson Mandela for the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund event in Paris. Their work is in private collections in Los Angeles, New York, Denmark, Florida, Germany, Australia and South Africa.
Freya has travelled to more than 60 countries, taking in the culture, language, art and music of the people they met. Growing up among artists and musicians on both sides of the family, they have carried a lifelong love of painting, dance and song into the work.
Their piece in Tethered Ground is a large hanging work, two and a half metres long.
