The Artist

Jessica Masego Nkuna is a multidisciplinary visual artist working in photography and film. A storyteller at heart, their work is rooted in empowering the Black community, giving voice to untold stories and shedding light on the cultural richness of the people around them.

Their fine art photography draws on childhood memories, queer culture and Black life. Alongside their studio practice they work in film production as a digital imaging technician and assistant director.

About the Work

MOTSUMI: A HUNTER is a series of self-portraits exploring how ecology shapes who we are. Using slow shutter speeds and overexposure, Jessica lets time stretch inside the frame so that edges dissolve and the body seems to merge with its surroundings.

The work is less about documenting what is seen and more about an inner dialogue between self and land. For Tethered Ground, the series is presented as digital prints on chiffon.
