Mihlali Madikane is a fashion designer born and raised in Johannesburg. Their work blends spirituality and storytelling through clothes, combining denim with unconventional fabrics and inventive textile techniques to challenge traditional fashion norms.
They are an award winner of the House of Savagery Designers Competition, one of three winners to exhibit at YFM GRYND 2026, and co-designed a House of Ole collection for Isuzu that was shown at South African Fashion Week.
The work runs on resilience, identity and transformation, drawn from their most painful experiences. Romans 8:18 takes apart the five stages of grief they went through while repeating their final year of fashion school in a new city. Cosmopolitan is built around a man who travels the world to inspire, with Riky Rick and Virgil Abloh behind it.
Royal Resilience, a couture dress made in calico, argues that couture does not need premium fabric. Khwe Xam is a coat inspired by the rock art of the Khwe Xam, the first South Africans, its cracked surface echoing rock splitting with age.
