The Artist

Qhamani Bangani was born in a village near Butterworth in the Eastern Cape and grew up as the only boy in a household of women, raised by a single mother alongside their sisters. Their early years were close to nature, oral tradition, ancestral stories and spiritual belief. A move to Cape Town for school deepened their awareness of identity and belonging.

Their work has been shown in Facing South: Mythical Mindscapes at Rele Gallery in Los Angeles and at The Paradise Art Show in Zug, Switzerland.

About the Work

Qhamani's work is rooted in intuition, dreams and inherited spiritual knowledge. Images and messages arrive through dreams and visions and are translated into intuitive marks, symbols and vibrant colour. Their grandmother, an artist who never had the means to pursue her practice, lives on in the work as a guiding presence.

The paintings do not try to explain. They open space for reflection and invite viewers to find their own meaning.
